Big Challenges, Bigger Victories

Take a look at three stories of students who overcame challenges on the path to progress…

Rocketing to Reading Growth

Our first story is about a creative student who loves to draw. This individual began one school year four grade-levels behind in reading achievement. An 8th grader reading at a 4th grade level according to their NWEA Map Growth Assessment scores.

Then Direct Instruction, delivered by caring teachers, came to the rescue.

The student took DI courses like Read to Achieve, Corrective Reading, and Reading Comprehension. When this individual was retested the following fall, the results were astonishing.

The student’s reading scores measured at a 10th grade level. They showed more annual growth than 99% of same-aged peers. What a star!

Making Magical Progress

Our second story is about a high school-aged student. This individual, who has a severe language deficit, recently took part in a study of IDAPT, the school’s custom built job and life skills training software.

First, the student was asked to make an unfamiliar recipe and given no further instructions. They took no action—completing 0 of 26 steps over four attempts.

Next, the student was handed a tablet with the IDAPT application opened to the recipe.

Here’s where the magic happened. They completed over 90% of the steps in the recipe with no help from their teacher on the first try! The student improved their score to 100% over the final three sessions.

Accelerating to Workplace Wins

In our final story we catch up with a former student now turned alumni. This individual took advantage of the school’s personalized approach to instruction and made steady progress during their time at AMS.

After graduating, they took a warehouse job for a major retailer.

We recently contacted them to see how things were going. They just received a promotion at work. In their new role, they’ll be training new hires at the fulfillment center. What a glowing success!

Safer Doors for 2025!

At Autism Model School, we’re committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment where children with autism can succeed. We believe that keeping them safe is just as important as their education.

The Need for Safer Doors

Many of our students are very sensitive to their surroundings and may react strongly to certain sounds, lights, or situations. Unfortunately, the doors at our school are old, have too much glass, and sometimes don’t close properly, which can be a safety concern.

What You Can Do

Your kind support towards upgrading our doors will…

Improve Safety: New doors will have much less glass, making the environment safer for our students.

Encourage Independence: The new doors will have handles designed to help students with different abilities open and close them on their own.

Prepare for Emergencies: The new doors will include safety features that allow staff to respond quickly in an emergency, while still keeping students secure.

Your Contribution Matters

We’re raising $10,000 to help us install new, autism-friendly doors throughout the school. Your donation will create a safer, more secure environment for our students.

Whether you can give $5 or $1,000, your support will make a real difference in the lives of children with autism.

By helping us upgrade our doors, you’re making sure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to achieve their best.

Join Us in Making a Change!

Together, we can make this important upgrade happen. Help us protect and inspire the students at Autism Model School.

Give today and make a difference in the lives of 100 students in our community.

Thank you for believing in our mission and supporting our students—GO STARS!

Summer Program Awarded $50K Grant

Temps are falling. Snow flurries are swirling.

And we’re glowing with gratitude.

Like sunshine on a July afternoon.

It’s all because the Autism Model School has just received a grant from the Stranahan Supporting Organization of Greater Toledo Community Foundation.

This $50,000 award will directly benefit our STAR summer learning program.

Extra instructional time offered through the STAR program is a key reason so many students are making steady progress.

Because of this partnership, students will now enjoy a higher quality educational experience. During the summer months and beyond.

Greater Toledo Community Foundation’s investment in summertime learning has also boosted our overall financial flexibility.

Now, we’re able to move forward with facility improvements–big changes that will boost the safety of our campus for years to come.

We have some big plans. And they’re already in motion.

So please hang with us for future updates…
