A Guide to Report Card Results for AMS
Achievement – The State Achievement Tests are language-based tests that in many instances do not measure the goals set for students at the Autism Model School. For many students, academic achievement is measured by pre-reading, pre-mathematics and pre-writing skill development. The Ohio State Achievement Tests do not measure progress in these areas. For students who are performing in traditional academic areas, the language base of Ohio State Tests is a classic deficit area for many students with autism.
Gap Closing – Nearly 100% of students at the Autism Model School enroll with performance levels significantly different from their typically developing peers. The nature of autism as a disability involves deficits and disorders in language development, processing, and expression. The Autism Model School will continue to report on Gap Closing through Local Measures of Student Performance comparisons year to year.
Graduation Rate – The State expectation is that students will graduate from High School in four years (generally at the age of 18). The Autism Model School encourages students to attend school until age 22 as is permitted by Federal and State Law. Due to the nature of autism, as well as the mission of the school, Autism Model School intends to continue to encourage those students who are interested to attend school until age 22. This longer educational program allows evidence-based programming to be extended for students with autism who can benefit from additional time in school. After the age of 18, it is always a student/parent choice regarding continued attendance versus graduation. To date, most students/parents choose to continue attending Autism Model School beyond the age of 18, and often until the age of 22.
